Greg talked to us about his career in the industry and mentioned a few artists to look up…

Ralph Eggleston: Joined Pixar in 1992, art director for their first feature film, Toy Story.

Design with a Purpose, interview with Ralph Eggleston regarding Wall_E where he was production designer: http://animationartconservation.com/?c=art&p=wall_e_design_with_a_purpose

Greg also mentioned that he worked on the Dementors in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban using cloth simulations, at the link below you can find out a bit more about the other work ILM contributed to the film…

Visualising the world

An image was created for teachers showing the resources that the library of congress has to offer. This image condenses all of the statistics into one easily accessible and understandable image.

Copernican heliocentrism

This is the name given to the astronomical model developed by Nicolaus Copernicus, which places the sun at the centre of the universe, remaining motionless while the rest of the solar system revolves around it, in circular paths. This development is often noted as the beginning point to modern astronomy and scientific revolution.

Man as industrial palace animation

Created by Dr. Fritz Kahn, he has illustrated the form and function of the human body with modern man machine analogies through the poster ‘Der Mensch ale Industriepalast’ (Man as Industrial Palace) which was created in 1926.

In 2006, 80 years later, German artist/designer Henning M Lederer decided to animated Kahn’s image of man as industrial place, conveying the functions of the body parts through Kahn’s original idea of machinery using motion graphics and animation.

Da Vinci’s Vitruvian man – the study of the proportions of the human body, linking art and science in a single work.

The link below explains the Vitruvian man in a bit more detail

Da Vinci was also extremely successful at mapping the human body, his drawings were used for evolution purposes and even to help with the development of surgery

“Remember that to be certain of the point of origin of any muscle, you must pull the sinew from which the muscle springs in such a way as to see that muscle move, and where it is attached to the ligaments of the bones.”

Da Vinci was given permission to dissect bodies as he become more successful as an artist – “I have removed the skin from a man who was so shrunk by illness that the muscles were worn down and remained in a state like thin membrane, in such a way that the sinews instead of merging in muscles ended in wide membrane; and where the bones were covered by the skin they had very little over their natural size.”

Da Vinci was also the first to draw a scientific representation of a fetus in intrautero.

“He possessed a strong thirst for knowledge: feet, skulls, and hands, hearts, and lungs, muscles, and sinews, buildings, bridges, and machines. He obsessively dissected, drew and examined like no other artist had done before. For him science and art were one. His aim for dissecting and drawing the body obsessively was to find the perfect geometric proportions that ruled the natural world – and God’s greatest creations was man himself.”

Timetables are a form of data that must be easily understood by everyone as it is something that is used daily..

Henry Charles Beck who had the idea of creating a full system map in colour though. He believed that passengers riding the Underground were not that bothered about geographical accuracy, and were more interested in how to get from one station to another and where to change trains. Thus Beck drew the diagram below, which looked more like and was based upon the concept of an electrical schematic than a true map, on which all the stations were more-or-less equally spaced.

a final example of data that has been visually adapted to be easily read by a certain audience is the periodic table – it can be recognised by almost everyone
